Khmer Rouge

The following is our standard Dark Tourism and Khmer Rouge Tour of Cambodia. This can be done as is, reduced, or expanded to include sites in places such Kampot and beyond.

 
Day 1 – Siem Reap
  • Arrive in Siem Reap at your convenience and check into the centrally located hotel by 2:00 PM.
  • Explore the old French town and visit the night market.
  • Dinner on Pub Street with options to try Angkor beers, fried tarantula, or scorpion
  • Overnight in Siem Reap.
Day 2 – Siem Reap
  • Early wake-up for sunrise at Angkor Wat.
  • Breakfast followed by exploration of Angkor archaeological park. Visit Ta Prohm temple (Tomb Raider Temple), Royal Palace ruins, and Bayon temple.
  • Afternoon visit to Siem Reap War Museum.
  • Visit Angkor National Museum for insights into Khmer culture and architecture.
  • Dinner and drinks on Pub Street.
  • Optional Apsara show (extra fee).
  • Overnight in Siem Reap.
Day 3 – Anlong Veng
  • Breakfast and visit Landmine Museum and Relief Centre.
  • Drive north to Anlong Veng (2 hours), the last Khmer Rouge hideout.
  • Lunch and check into hotel.
  • Driving tour of Anlong Veng, including Ta Mok’s house.
  • Visit graves of Son Sen, Ta Mok, and Pol Pot.
  • Stop at Anlong Veng Peace Observatory for scenic views.
  • Visit Pol Pot’s former home and bunker.
  • Dinner and drinks in Anlong Veng.
  • Overnight at Heng Hotel.
Day 4 – Battambang
  • Breakfast and drive to Battambang (4 hours).
  • Explore colonial-era architecture in the city.
  • Ride the famous bamboo train.
  • Visit Phnom Sampeau killing caves and watch the bat exodus at
  • dusk.
  • Dinner and explore Battambang nightlife.
  • Overnight at Sanctuary Villa.

Day 5 – Kampong Chhnang

  • Breakfast and drive to Kampong Chhnang (3 hours).
  • Check into hotel and visit bustling market and floating village.
  • Lunch in town.
  • Visit Khmer Rouge abandoned airport and nearby mass graves.
  • Explore 18th-century Khmer fortress of Udong.
  • Overnight in Kampong Chhnang.
Day 6 – Phnom Penh
  • Breakfast and drive to Phnom Penh (3 hours).
  • Arrive in time for Khmer New Year celebrations with street parades and water fights.
  • Check into hotel and lunch.
  • Visit Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda.
  • Tour Tuol Sleng (S21) genocide museum and meet a survivor.
  • Visit Killing Fields of Choeung Ek.
  • Explore Boeung Kak region, former eviction site.
  • Stop by the Prime Minister’s house near Independence Monument.
  • Dinner and pub crawl in Phnom Penh.
  • Overnight at OK Boutique Hotel.
Day 7 – Phnom Penh to Siem Reap
  • End of tour or join Khmer New Year Extension.
  • 10 AM bus to Siem Reap (6-hour journey with lunch stop).
  • Check into hotel.
  • Evening water fights on Pub Street.
  • Dinner and street food exploration.
  • Party on Pub Street.
  • Overnight in Siem Reap.
 
Day 8 – Siem Reap
  • Late start with breakfast at hotel.
  • Walk around Siem Reap’s main market.
  • Lunch in the countryside with a traditional Khmer New Year feast.
  • TukTuk ride to Tonle Sap Lake for a boat trip and optional swim.
  • Dinner and drinks at Tonle Sap.
  • Attend a traditional Khmer dance party.
  • Overnight in Siem Reap.
 

Day 9 – Siem Reap
• End of tour with us able to arrange ongoing transport or accommodation where needed.
